Walter AttawayWalter Attaway crafts personal, intelligent interiors mindful of comfort and function. His aesthetic remains faithful to the classic and traditional tenets of design while adventuring an intermix of styles and periods to deliver interiors that are relevant, fresh, and dimensional. Walter curates and creates with a remarkable eye for quality and “good design,” a command evident in his erudite interiors and the bespoke furnishings he endeavors. Ever wary of the Stepfordian or inauthentic interior, Walter plugs character—the subtleties and nuances of living space—along with visceral impact for engaging and expressive interiors that endure beyond whim and fluid trends.

Walter came to interior design as an artist struck by the field’s interdisciplinary virtue. The groundwork began in his family’s Georgia home, which valued finer things and took an active interest in culture and the arts. Walter grew up exploring many pathways and, in his early liberal arts education, struggled to settle on a singular route. Walter happened upon a trade magazine while in college decorating his first loft and quickly discovered that interior design channeled to tremendous satisfaction his varied interests. Following interior design studies at the University of Georgia, Walter interned and enjoyed employment with an esteemed interior design firm in Georgia and worked as an antiques buyer for a handful of Atlanta dealers and a Madison Avenue gallery. Walter topped off his design education at the prestigious Cambridge-sponsored Christie’s Education program in London, where he degreed in Fine and Decorative Arts with a concentration in furniture.

In 2004 Walter opened his own design studio in his hometown of Rome, Georgia, an hour northwest of Atlanta. After a decade of regional design with projects spanning Savannah, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Tallahassee, Walter made a New York connection that persuaded him to bring his perspective and talent to Long Island and open Walter Attaway The Shop, a retail store and design studio located in historic Southampton Village. Walter now resides in the Hamptons with his wife Kay and their young son Newman.
