19th Century French Bee Skep

About this piece

A rare surviving example constructed of woven willow and plastered mud.  Placed open-end down in a field or orchard, a bee colony would form within the structure and produce a large honeycomb.  The bee skep was almost always destroyed during the harvesting of the honey.
